I've got some thoughts. The System-100 has a delightful 70s analog sound to it, which is good on its own - but I think it's a little tooooo vintage for my style. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just that it's a sound from before my time, and I feel like it has too much historical baggage to keep up with newer instrumentation.
I tried a couple of other synths this weekend and, well, I still prefer the Jupiter-8. I'm clearly biased because it's the one I learned on, but I feel like it's in a sweet spot between retro and modern. Maybe I'll grow out of it eventually, but I don't see that happening any time soon.
That said:
Surge XT - I really want to like this synth, it's actually quite excellent, and it would probably be my go-to under other circumstances. It's got loads of features I don't know what to do with, but the example patches are pretty impressive. It sounds a bit thin and boring if you're not stacking up effects though. It's just... mathematically pure oscillators, there's nothing unique about them, they don't drift or flutter.
TAL-J-8 - This is a really good synth in its own right. It sounds like an idealized version of the real thing. If I ever decide to drop Roland Cloud, I'm buying this. I think the official emulator edges it out, though.
Anyway that's my weekend, thanks for reading.
